U.S. exports of agricultural-related machinery totaled nearly $8 billion in 2009, a 23-percent drop compared to the previous year, with the largest declines in business to Europe and South America. |
| |
U.S. construction equipment exports dropped more than 38 percent in 2009 compared to the previous year. However, quarter-to-quarter declines steadily improved, ending with a fourth-quarter 2009 gain of 26 percent over the third quarter.

AEM Canada urges depreciation rate changes
|

AEM joined the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition in a letter to Canadian Finance Minister James Flaherty, urging him to extend the period during which businesses can claim a two-year depreciation rate for investments in manufacturing and processing machinery and equipment for an additional five years.

Federal highway funding hits political snag
|
| |
The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced that they will begin furloughing Federal Highway Administration employees March 1 due to the impasse in the Senate to approve an extension of the federal aid highway program. Highway construction supported by the Highway Trust Fund will also be cut off as the states will not be able to reimbursed by the federal government.

Senate passes Jobs Bill extending highway programs through 2010

| |
By a vote of 70-28 Wednesday, the Senate passed the Jobs Bill extending highway programs through Dec. 31, 2010. AEM's efforts will now be focused on making this a "meaningful extension" during which work begins on a fully funded, multi-year reauthorization and is completed before year's end.

The agreement provides for permanent U.S. access to Canadian provincial and territorial procurement contracts in accordance with the World Trade Organization Government Procurement Agreement. AEM Grassroots Action Alert: Senate to vote on "Jobs Bill" this Monday
|

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a vote on the Senate version of jobs creation legislation for this Monday, February 22. The bill includes an extension of current surface transportation infrastructure programs through December 2010, and transfers $19.5 billion from the general fund of the treasury to the Highway Trust Fund (HTF), to ensure the programs' solvency. Contact your home-state Senators to urge passage of this legislation.

New Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC guide is available for download

The first edition of a guide to the application of the new Machinery Directive 206/42/EC, dated December 2009, is now available for download. The intent is "to publish regular updates of the Guide in order to introduce answers to questions agreed by the Machinery Committee and the Machinery Working Group."

Ag Flash Report: New products in store

AEM Statistics Department has added two new Ag Flash products, which are now available through the AEM Store. These products include a historical 10-year Ag Flash monthly data report, a 40-year annual historical Ag Flash report (U.S. only) and a 30-year annual historical Ag Flash report (Canada only).

AEM members, construction industry flood Capitol Hill switchboard in support of infrastructure

More than 5,000 calls went through the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) call-in system Thursday, Dec. 10, on the way to Capitol Hill with a simple message that Congress needs to take action now on highway funding. Recent developments on highway bill authorization extension, 2010 highway funding and job creation legislation are interwoven and very fluid as congressional negotiations continue.

House passes Estate Tax bill, extends shortened ag equipment depreciation schedule

The House of Representatives voted to extend a variety of popular tax provisions that are set to expire at the end of the year as well as passed the Permanent Estate Tax Relief for Families, Farmers, and Small Businesses Act of 2009.
