During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Megan Tanel, president of AEM, participated in a panel discussion entitled "Driving Sustainability." The panel brought together industry leaders to discuss the innovations and strategies being implemented across various transportation sectors to mitigate environmental impacts and promote a greener future. Tanel, alongside other prominent figures, provided valuable insights into how the equipment manufacturing industry is contributing to these efforts.
The panel, moderated by Ellen Bradley, chief brand officer of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), Ryan Lindsey, executive vice president of CRH, and Jeff Wasil, director of environmental health & safety at NMMA. The discussion focused on the various approaches each industry is taking toward sustainability and the challenges they face in reducing carbon emissions and environmental footprints.
Tanel emphasized the critical role that the equipment manufacturing industry plays in this broader effort.
"Sustainability is everyone's business," Tanel declared. "Our industry's future depends on the responsible use of natural resources, and we are fully committed to embracing sustainable practices to remain competitive globally."
Tanel outlined several key strategies the equipment manufacturing industry is employing to drive sustainability. One of the primary focuses is the reduction of engine emissions through the development and adoption of alternative power technologies, including battery-electric systems, low-carbon fuels, and hydrogen fuel. These innovations are crucial for reducing the environmental impact of equipment used in construction, agriculture, and other sectors.
Additionally, Tanel highlighted the industry's push for digital construction technology, which has led to significant sustainability gains. By leveraging data-driven tools, the industry has seen reductions in smog pollution, particulate emissions, and carbon dioxide output. These technologies, including machine telematics and digital control systems, are transforming job sites by improving efficiency and safety while reducing environmental impact.
AEM’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond technological advancements. Tanel spoke about the importance of collaboration within the industry, noting that the association has prioritized fostering partnerships over competition to achieve shared sustainability goals.
"Seeing the commitment to work together, putting competition aside, is one of the most exciting things happening in our industry right now," she said.
This collaborative spirit is embodied in AEM’s Sustainability Council, established in 2019. The council serves as a vital platform for industry stakeholders to share best practices, align on sustainability standards, and work together on initiatives that drive the industry toward a greener future.
In her remarks, Tanel also stressed the importance of engaging with policymakers to develop effective and realistic regulations that support sustainability goals. She pointed out that the equipment manufacturing industry has valuable expertise in decarbonization solutions, which can help shape future policies. Tanel advocated for a balanced approach, urging regulators to consider technology neutrality, cost-effectiveness, and the need for harmonized regulations that do not stifle innovation.
Looking ahead, Tanel expressed optimism about the potential for further advancements in sustainable technology and practices within the industry. She called for enhanced incentives and public funding in the upcoming federal Highway Bill to support the adoption of new technologies that can significantly reduce the sector's carbon footprint.
Tanel’s participation in the panel highlighted the proactive steps the equipment manufacturing industry is taking to address environmental challenges. Through innovation, collaboration, and strategic policy engagement, AEM and its member companies are leading the charge toward a more sustainable future, ensuring that the industry remains a key player in global efforts to combat climate change.
