Daniel Best

In 1871, Daniel Best pioneered a machine to clean grain in the field and was, along with Benjamin Holt, responsible for much of the early development of the combine. The steam harvester, patented by Best in 1889, was a milestone in mechanized agriculture. Best's steam traction engines quickly found their way into forestry, mining and construction. However, even before Best's steam engine was marketed, he began experimenting with internal combustion engines. Field service was a concept pioneered by Best. He would write to customers to see if they were satisfied. Repairs were made quickly by himself or a mechanic dispatched from the factory.
